Did you know that one study claims the ratio of scams to real work from home opportunities is 54:1 on the internet? That seems extremely high and I would like to know what methods they used to reach that conclusion. But their point is well made. It can sometimes be difficult to determine which advertisements are valid and which are fraudulant.

Most of these "scams" [or questionable income opportunities] follow a simple formula where they sell information about a work at home job for a modest price. However, since the price people pay is modest, they don’t generally expose the scam; and so it happens again and again. Be wary of work at home job "opportunities" that sound good on the surface, but require you to pay up-front fees for details, application forms, job lists, start-up kits, membership, etc.

That being said, remember that all websites have overhead costs and expenses and are in business to make a profit. Therefore they can't necessarily offer their services for free. As a result... some of these fees can be legitimate costs of doing business online. There are a few of rules of thumb to follow before paying a fee for an online income opportunity.

1. Home Based Business Opportunities are just that... a "business" which will require an investment of both time and money. So if you click on a website that is offering a small or home business opportunity, be prepared to make an upfront investment. Self employment offers also fall into this category.

2. Work at home or work from home income opportunities may or may not have a fee included with the offer. If the income claims look to good to be true then you will probably want to pass. However, if the ad states you can make $500-$1500 per month part time working from home; that could be legitimate. If there is no fee or a "free trial" then it is most likely a good opportunity to make money at home.

3. If an upfront fee is required, then the chances of the income source being legitimate decreases considerably. But not completely. If you already know someone who is making money with the business or have made direct contact with at least two of the people providing "testimonials" then you can have more confidence. One final thing before making the payment though... do not ever pay a fee unless the company includes a 100% money back guarantee.

There are many websites that expose work at home job scams and frauds. However, you must do your own research on any home based job you might consider taking and agressively obtain all the relevant facts BEFORE taking the plunge..
